"We often think of the brain as a machine with parts. We think the brain is hardwired like a computer.
But machines don't change, and they can't grow new parts. We now know that our understanding was spectacularly wrong"
Dr Norman Doidge Author of 'The Brain that Changes Itself'
Recent developments in neuro-science have shown that the brain is 'plastic' - the structure & function of our brain & our nervous system, which help to control how we function, have incredible capacity to change through learning & experience.
Somatics trains your brain to change your body. By improving your awareness & using specifically designed movements, we teach you how to sense & recognise muscular tension & contraction patterns in your body, that you may no longer aware of, because they have become habituated over time. You then learn how to release these habitual patterns of tension.
Our control of movement is innately linked to our ability to sense & feel - it is only by increasing our awareness, & learning to sense our bodies more fully from the inside, that our nervous system can change the way we hold ourselves & the way we move.
The results are lasting—we develop new pathways in the nervous system, regaining full control over muscles & learning new movement patterns.
This is known as neuro-muscular re-programming.
If we really think about it, our sensory motor system is so fundamental to the way we live, that if anything goes wrong with this system our lives will be fundamentally diminished. How we sense our world & who we perceive
ourself to be is affected, just as much as how we act in the world & how well our bodies function.Whilst Somatics
works specifically through the neuro-muscular system, this is just one physical route into the mind-body, which allows us to effect change & learning on many different levels - energetic, mental, emotional & spiritual.
Somatics - the difference is clear
One of the main aims of Somatic Movement Education is to equip you with simple self-care exercises & techniques that you can use for the rest of your life, independently of a practitioner to help counteract the stresses & strains of everyday living.
The approach encourages you to take responsibility for your own health - you are not a 'patient' .'being treated': rather you are a student, & your own best teacher.
