Denise brings a sense of professionalism, reassurance & understanding to her work, & passionately believes that we can all greatly improve & enhance our own quality of life, when we develop our awareness of our own mind-body & learn to connect with our innate resources.
Having herself successfully re-habilitated from serious spinal injury, which left her with significant paralysis & loss of sensation down much of one leg, Denise is uniquely placed to help others learn from her own personal experiences & the ‘insider knowledge’ she had to gain in order to recover: first-hand experience of how our sensory-motor system works, how we can learn new movement patterns, & how we can create for ourselves the conditions that allow our bodies to heal.
"Having originally trained as a scientist, I am fascinated by how biology & physics are merging at the leading edge of scientific discovery, & how western evidence-based approaches are increasingly finding evidence & theory that explains some of the efficacy of the older 'eastern' medecines.
However, primarily, I am interested in finding out what works & I value my own experience of my own body over explanations & theoretical frameworks. I am interested in what makes a difference to my quality of life, & to the quality of life of my clients.
I was unfortunate to suffer a major spinal injury in 2008, when following lower back problems on-and-off for about 5 years, one of the discs in my lower back prolapsed & compressed my spinal nerves (Cauda Equina Syndrome). This led to an emergency surgery, & left me paralysed & without feeling down much of my right leg. I had to slowly learn to walk again over a period of over 6 months. Against all odds, I was back teaching on the ski slopes (albeit very gingerly!) 10 months after my surgery.
Denise is a Certified Somatic Movement Educator, & Registered Yoga Teacher. In her One2One work, Denise specialises in helping people suffering from back pain or rehabbing from injury or surgery, as well as those looking to improve their sports performance.
Denise holds an MA (Hons) in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, & is a qualified & experienced ski instructor & trained swimming instructor. Denise is also currently studying for an MA in Psychotherapy.
Now based in London, Denise has worked and trained in a number of different countries including the USA, Canada, Italy & Egypt. Denise pursued a career as a consultant, auditor & Programme Manager within a 'Big 4' professional services firm & in industry, before deciding to explore her passions for creativity, sport, movement & all things 'mind-body'.
Over 2 years later, I have roughly 90% of the function back in my right leg, & I am continuing to regain movement & sensation by putting my trust in the capacity of my own body to heal itself & in the amazing practitioners that I have sought out & continue to learn from. The Somatic principles & techniques that I use with my clients, are the ones that I have found invaluable in helping me in my own recovery.
I always seek to provide a truly integrated mind-body approach, & for my work to incorporate the best of what more intuitive and holistic mind-body approaches have to offer, with what advances in science are revealing. I am passionate about recognising what is unique in each of us & in encouraging each individual to reach their own, full, potential".
